Subject choice at the Namib High School is based largely on the field of Natural Sciences.
The following subject choices are offered:
GRADES 8 – 10
|English Home Language||or||English Second Language|
|German Home Language||or||German Foreign Language|
|Group 1||Group 2|
|Visual Art||Computer Practice|
|Word Processing & Keyboard Skills||Accounting|
|Entrepreneurship||Integrated Performing Art|
Learners have to choose two of the above optional subjects, one from each group. Only a limited number of learners can be admitted to Computer Practice and/or Word Processing and Keyboard Skills, due to the limited number of computers available. Prior knowledge of an optional subject is required if a learner wants to join in Grade 9 or 10.
GRADES 11 AND 12
|English First Language||or||English Second Language|
In addition to the above, the following subjects are offered at this school:
|German First Language||or||German Foreign Language|
|Afrikaans First Language||or||Afrikaans Second Language|
|Art and Design*|
All subjects, except Afrikaans Second Language, are available on Higher Level.
- At least 20 learners must opt for a subject before it can be introduced into the Grade 12 examination.
- A seventh subject may be offered for examinations, but private teaching has to be arranged.
At Namib High School we believe that homework makes a valuable contribution to the learner’s progress as well as self-development. It is essential that students learn to study on their own at home, as many of the subjects in Grades 11 and 12 require learners to produce original assignments. Homework is relevant in content and appropriate to the level of each grade, and must be completed on a regular basis.
Parents can help by providing a quiet place to work after school, having a selection of good reference books at hand, or if not possible, at least provide a lift to the Library.
It is also important to show an active interest in whatever work your child does. Every bit of encouragement and interest shown will help with a learner’s progress. The school library makes books available to learners in as wide a field of subjects as possible. The Internet is now also available to learners. Today, this connection is a very valuable tool for any learner’s research and the school is grateful to provide this facility.
Considering all the help that is available failure to complete homework regularly is a serious offence and will result in appropriate disciplinary measures being taken. Parents may be called in to help re-inforce the concept of the importance of homework and a written warning will be issued.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Namib High School offers a wide range of both sport and cultural extra curricular activities, and is very proud of the excellent achievements of many learners in these fields.
While not all of these sports facilities are directly linked to the school, every encouragement is given to sportsmen and women and every achievement is recognized.
Namib High School is very proud of the fact that it is the recognized home of the Mascato Coastal Youth Choir and that various private music teachers offer lessons at the school.
Namib High School also offers learners a vast number of opportunities to take part in national and international competitions and fairs, for examples:
- Best Speakers Competitions
The Kurt-Böhme Rednerwettbewerb
Regional, National and International Science Fairs
Art and Essay competitions
German Foreign Language competitions.
There are also a number of field trips arranged for learners to broaden their education and to act as team builders among members of the group, e.g. Grades 9 and 11 outings, orientation weeks and leadership courses for the LRC and class prefects.
Namib High School owns a 18-seater bus. Learners are transported in this vehicle when necessary (e.g. to sports matches, school outings) for which a nominal amount is charged per trip. The balance of the running costs is subsidized from school funds.
